PROVISIONAL TEACHER PROGRAM

What is a Provisional Teacher?

Mentoring

ALTERNATE ROUTE

In addition to the mentoring program, all alternate route candidates must attend 200 hours of formal instruction at one of several sites located throughout the state. The cost of attending these classes is $1,300.00 for all alternate route candidates and is the responsibility of the candidate. The formal instruction component of an alternate route teacher's training is an integral part of the Provisional Teacher Program and must be completed in a timely manner prior to recommendation for a standard certificate. In addition to the formal instruction, alternate route candidates must complete thirty-four (34) weeks of full-time teaching in order to fulfill program requirements.

All certification questions should be referred to Mrs. Kathy Izzi, (908) 851-6425.

MENTORING

Effective September 2001, the New Jersey Department of Education implemented a new and rigorous mentoring program for all novice teachers. The Department of Education defines the goal of the mentoring program as follows:

  To enhance teacher knowledge of and strategies related to the Core Curriculum Standards in order to facilitate student achievement;
  To identify exemplary teaching skills and educational practices necessary to acquire and maintain excellence in teaching; and
  To assist novice teachers in the performance of their duties and adjustment to the challenge of teaching.

For the 2005-2006 school year, all first year provisional and alternate route teachers will participate in the district's mentoring program. A mentor will be assigned to each first year teacher, and mentor and mentee will participate in the district's mentoring program plan. The stipend paid to the mentor will be funded by the Department of Education if funding is available or by the first year teacher.
