EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Congratulations!

The Township of Union Education Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients for educational grants for the school year 2008-2009.

This year, the Foundation is awarding two large macro-grants.  The first is for a pilot program in the German language department to be started at Union High School.  Students will use modern technology on a daily basis in German class to connect with other German language classes and German news, radio, television, educational websites with video clips and sound bites of native German speakers.  Students will better understand the German language and culture and observe its real world applications.

The other large macro-grant is being awarded to the Math Department at Union High School.  A team of teachers will work with students to utilize math through the real world applications by developing a study of traffic patterns at Union High School, devising solutions, and presenting them to the Township.

The Education Foundation is awarding three mini-grants to individual teachers or teams:

Gregory Pardo, fourth grade teacher at Connecticut Farms School, has been awarded a grant for his students to work in teams to devise a working hoverboard.  Students will research and analyze prior to developing a design which they will then construct.

Linda Hrevnack and Joan Pikula, K-4 and fourth grade teachers at Connecticut Farms School, will implement a year-long project studying the environment focusing on the importance of the impact of a watershed area on the lives of people in the state of New Jersey.  Students will investigate a salt marsh in two seasons, noting changes, and they will design and build a functional water filtering system.

Susan Doyle and Lindsay Conneely, first grade teachers at Livingston School, have developed a year long project for their students to study insects.  The project will integrate math, technology, literacy, social studies, art and music and will culminate in a family program for student and parents.

Education Foundation grants are competitive grants and these proposals represent the hard work of our teachers!

The grant recipients will be honored at our annual cocktail and dessert reception on May 15th, 2008 from 5:30 to 8:30 sponsored by Schering Plough Corporation at their Morris Avenue site.  All community members are invited to attend.  Donation is $20.00.  To attend, checks made payable to Township of Union Education Foundation should be sent to Irene Goldie-Petras, 1113 Liberty Ave., Union,  NJ 07083. For further information, please contact Sue at 908-851-9869.
