PROVISIONAL TEACHER PROGRAM

Alternate Route

PROVISIONAL TEACHERS

Two types of provisional licenses exist in the State of New Jersey. The first type of provisional license is one in which the candidate holds a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS). The CEAS is issues to all graduates of state-approved college teacher training programs. The second type of provisional license is one in which the candidate holds a Certificate of Eligibility (CE). The CE is issued to those qualified applicants who have not completed a state approved college teacher-training program and are alternate route candidates. Both provisional licenses require the employing district to provide the required support and supervision as outlined by the Department of Education. Two formative evaluations at thirty weeks (34 for alternate route candidates) of employment and a recommendation for standard licensure are components of the provisional program.

MENTORING

Effective September 2001, the New Jersey Department of Education implemented a new and rigorous mentoring program for all novice teachers. The Department of Education defines the goal of the mentoring program as follows:

  To enhance teacher knowledge of and strategies related to the Core Curriculum Standards in order to facilitate student achievement;
  To identify exemplary teaching skills and educational practices necessary to acquire and maintain excellence in teaching; and
  To assist novice teachers in the performance of their duties and adjustment to the challenge of teaching.

For the 2005-2006 school year, all first year provisional and alternate route teachers will participate in the district's mentoring program. A mentor will be assigned to each first year teacher, and mentor and mentee will participate in the district's mentoring program plan. The stipend paid to the mentor will be funded by the Department of Education if funding is available or by the first year teacher.
