Overview of the Program...
The Township of Union Public Schools Title I/Academic Achievement Program {AAP} is designed to meet the educational needs of those students identified as scoring below the district’s minimum standards in Language Arts and/or Mathematics.  The Board of Education receives Federal Title I Targeted Assistance Funds to support the Title I/Academic Achievement Program.

Students are identified for the Title I/Academic Achievement Program based upon a multiple-measures process.   Students who score below district established minimum levels of proficiency {MLP} in Language Arts or Mathematics are initially identified through the NJASK or Terra Nova administrations.  The student’s regular classroom teacher provides input about the student’s daily functioning in the classroom setting.  Students who score below the MLP and are recommended by the classroom teacher are eligible for Title I/Academic Achievement Program supplementary services.  In the full day Kindergarten, students are identified for Title I/Academic Achievement Program services.  In the full day Kindergarten, students are eligible for Title I/Academic Achievement services based upon a locally developed skills checklist, which is completed by the Kindergarten teacher in November.

Instruction in grade level subject area Core Curriculum Content Standards established by the New Jersey State Department of Education is integrated with Title I/Academic Achievement students’ needs as identified in their Individual Student Improvement Plans (ISIP).  These plans are developed by the Title I/AAP teachers, based upon the assessment information and the small group instructional strategies determined by the Title I/AAP teacher to be appropriate for meeting the students’ needs.  The Title I/AAP teacher works closely with the classroom teacher to ensure that a coordinated program of instruction is provided to the students and the supplementary services are directly applicable to the general classroom setting.  In addition to direct instruction, Title I/AAP students receive computer-assisted instruction focused on individualized learning needs.

At the beginning of the school year the parents receive a letter explaining the child’s placement in the Title I/Academic Achievement Program, a copy of the Individualized Student Improvement Plan and home-school compact.

At a parent’s written request and the parent does not want the child to participate in the supplement classes, a refusal process is available.
