German Students Excel!
Senior German V student, Daniel Marques distinguished himself by scoring a 91 on the National German Test sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German, Inc. Over 25, 500 students participate nationwide. Dan’s classmate Fabio Oliver scored 83 and AP German student, Alyssa Kaporch scored 80. Other high scorers were 10th grade Level 3 Honors students Everett Johnson scoring 87 and Laurinel Gramatica scoring 81.
Demetrius Jeter won first place for his presentation of “Heidenröslein” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the Advanced German Level in the 26th Annual Poetry Recitation Contest held at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ.
All of these students deserve recognition for a job well done and are especially congratulated by their German teacher, Mrs. Doris Glowacki!
Art Students Receive Awards
Two UHS students received awards at the Congressional Art Show, which was held at the Newark Art Museum. Pictured above is Congressman Payne who presented the awards. Pictured on the left is Kirsten Gloss, a 12th grader who received a third place medal in photography. On the right is Amanda Alves who received a second place award in painting.
Softball Team Wins Title

The Girls Varsity Softball Team captured the 2009 Union County Championship on May 16th against Linden with a 3-1 win. The last time Union won this championship was in 2000. They also captured the North 2 Group 4 State Sectional on May 30th with a 1-0 win over North Hunterdon in the bottom of the 8th inning. It has been 14 years since Union last won this title. Their season record was 26 wins and only 4 losses.

UHS Track Star Goes For Record
Ugonna Ndu, Senior and #1 ranked 400m Hurdle runner in the Country, is attempted hurdling history as she attempted to become Union’s first Meet of Champions Winner. She came in second. This past weekend she won the group IV title in the 400 hurdles, and the 100 Hurdles. She is the reigning Union County Champion in the Long Jump, 400 hurdles, and 100 Hurdles.

UHS Student Honored for Excellence in German
Daniel Marques has recently been honored for being among the top 83rd percentile of over 23,000 students who took the National German Examination administered by the American Association of Teachers of German in 2009. Founded in 1926, the AATG is the only national organization representing German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of language, literature and culture of the German-speaking countries.
Awards for outstanding students are donated by AATG, the German government, Austrian Cultural Forum and Langenscheidt Publishers.
Daniel Marques is a graduating senior enrolled in German V at Union High School in Union, New Jersey. Mrs. Doris Glowacki is his German teacher.
Art Classes Visit Sculpture Garden

On April 29 students from Mrs. Gabriel's Photography classes, and Mr. Jones's Digital Arts classes visited the Kendell Sculpture Gardens on the site of Pepsico's headquarters in Purchase, NY. In 1970 Donald M. Kendell, the company's chief executive, moved the corporate headquarters 31 miles from Manhattan to Purchase, with the intention of creating an atmosphere of creativity, stability and experimentation. Surrounding the main building on the 168 acres site are placed many sculptures from famous artists such as Calder, Miro, Giacometti, Moore, Segal and Rodin. The sculptures are placed along a path that travels through beautifully designed landscaped gardens and ponds. The students are pictured next to Alexander Calder's "Hats Off".

Group Takes Trip to Washington
On April 9th students from Union High School visited Washington D.C to pay tribute and visit The United States Holocaust Museum, World War 2 Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Memorial. The goal of the trip was to preserve the memory of those who have suffered and reflect upon those that have served our nation with courage and sacrifice.

UHS Graduate is "Super"
Super Bowl Champion and Union High School Class of 2003 graduate, Darnell Stapleton was a guest on the UHS CAST Department's Our School, to be aired later this month on UNIONTV34. Dr. Jakubowski was joined by Township of Union Mayor Anthony Terrezza to talk to Darnell about his personal and professional experience from his days in high school to winning the Superbowl XLIII with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Twirlers Given the Mayor's Award
Union High School twirlers were given the Mayor's Award for their accomplishments at the Twirlmania International Competition in Florida. Under the leadership of Gina Calderone, the girls placed First in Parade, First in Twirl Team and Third in Twirl and Dance Team. In addition to the team's accomplishments, Jenna Massarelli took the gold in the Senior Photogenic category and Victoria Cook earned the silver in the Junior Photogenic category.

| "Stylist to the Stars", David Evangelista visited Union High Schools Cosmetology class. His enthusiasm was apparent, as he generously described his journey to becoming the successful entrepreneur he is today. David's list of accomplishments, working on television, being involved in Fashion week, Photo shoots and an "A" List clientele served as inspiration for the cosmetology students. His captivating demeanor kept the attention of the students as they listened to his real life stories. Motivated and in awe they exclaimed "How lucky are we!" |

| Congratulations to the UHS Dance Club Step Team who has emerged this year as a powerful force. Under Coach Useline Matthew, they have earned four trophies in the five competitions they have participated in this year, two of which are for 1st place and two for 3rd place. Jennifer Grod Elected Lieutenant Governor
Jennifer Grod, a junior at Union High School, was recently elected Lieutenant Governor of Division 14 of the New Jersey District of Key Club International. Jennifer will assume her duties as Lieutenant Governor after her official induction at the 63rd Annual New Jersey District Convention to be held in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, from April 17th-19th. |

Girls Going Places
On November 19, 2008, Mr. Riley accompanied seven young women to Kean University to participate in "Girls Going Places" an Entrepreneurship Program Agenda presented by Northeast Planning Corporation and the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. There the girls joined 100 other young ladies along with 20 mentors, all women. They are all successful in their field many of them owning their own businesses. These mentors spent time with the girls explaining their role in their businesses. It was a wonderful experience for the girls to receive a woman's perspective on business. Union High School plans on attending this conference again in October 2009.

Robotics Students Advance in Engineering Competition
Union High School has two teams participating in the 2009 Panasonic Creative Design Challenge. Noel Katalbas, Zach Mauro, and Aaron Mendigorin make up Team 1, while Team 2 includes Kwasi Amankona, Mike Ribeiro, and Kevin Thomas. Under the direction of their teacher/advisor Mr. Len Gallo, both teams participated in the Preliminary Challenge on January 21st, and have successfully qualified to participate in the Final Challenge in March. Students on the team that wins this statewide competition will each receive a $5,000 scholarship. This engineering/robotics competition is sponsored by Panasonic and NJIT. Students Exhibit Artwork
The artwork of two UHS students, Kevin Cisko and Richard Fernandez, are currently included in the "Emerging Artists Exhibit" at Kean University. The exhibit presents art work produced by students in high school throughout the State of New Jersey. The works are judged and Awards of Merit and Honorable Mention are presented to the student artists.
The twenty first annual Emerging Artists Exhibit is sponsored by the Art Administrators of New Jersey, and is being held at the James Howe Gallery at Kean University from January 9 through February 8, 2009. The Awards Ceremony will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, February 8.

New Technology Being Used in the Classroom
