Alumni on Chapionship Soccer Team
On Nov. 14, 2009, the Union County College Soccer team won the National Junior College Athletic Association D III National Championship by defeating Richland College 1-0. The hard fought defensive struggle was tied 0-0 at the half. Richland College, of Dallas Texas, outshot Union in the first stanza 5-1. But midway through the second half sophomore Kemar Richards netted what proved to be the game winning goal. A solid defense lead by freshman goalkeeper Shelson Dorleans kept the Thunder Ducks out of the Owl’s goal the rest of the way. Union completed their season riding an 11 game winning streak, including six straight play-off victories.
This is the first National Championship for Union County College in any sport. UCC soccer was making its fourth appearance in the Final Four of the national tournament in the last 7 years. Ironically it was Richland College who crushed Union’s hopes in the championship game in 2003 and the semi-final in 2007.
Coach Alex Louis was named the National Championship All-Tournament Coach and Shelson Dorleans the Tournament MVP. Also named to the All-Tournament Team were Kemar Richards, sophomore Patrick Osei-Frimpong, and freshman Michael Opong
.
Gregory Pogorzelski, Pedro Sousa and Brian Barrera
Coach Louis said “the team was determined to be national champs this season after coming so close in the past”. Brett Axelrod named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week
Brett Axelrod, a senior goalkeeper, netted the NWC weekly honor on defense while Todd Wallenius, a junior forward, picked off the award for offense.
Axelrod, a four-year starter, made six saves against 23 shots in Whitman's opener last Friday at Westminster (Salt Lake City), preserving a 1-1 tie for the Missionaries with three saves in the second overtime, one of which was a kick save that nullified a Westminster breakaway opportunity.
Axelrod then posted his first shutout of the season on Sunday, making three saves against nine shots in a 1-0 double-overtime victory over NCAA Div. II Dixie State. Axelrod went the distance in the two games, playing a total of 213 minutes in the Missionary goal.
The first of the NWC weekly soccer awards were for games through Sunday.
Earlier today (Monday), Axelrod posted his second double-overtime shutout of
the season as Whitman battled Northwest Nazarene to a 0-0 deadlock in Nampa,
Idaho.
Axelrod, who earned Second-Team All-NWC honors last season, is a graduate of
Union (New Jersey) High School.
