COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
All secondary music students who are enrolled in a performance class will benefit from individual group instruction. Classes are set up on a rotating basis whereby the student will miss a given academic class approximately once every fifth week. Students are responsible for all work missed in their academic classes. Students may only be involved in the rotating music classes if they are enrolled in a performing ensemble or music course
JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Open to students approved by the High School instrumental music teacher. This course is designed to developÐ performance in the jazz idiom, training students in ensemble, sectional, and improvisational techniques. Musical styles of the various eras of jazz will be studied and performed
CONCERT BAND
Open to all students who possess performance skills on band instruments. This course is directed toward theÐ improvement of each student's individual performance, understanding, and interest in a recognized art form. The study of technique building exercises, transportation, sightreading, and performance of a variety of symphonic band literature will be included in the course of study.
WIND ENSEMBLE
Open to students approved by the High School instrumental music teacher. Students will explore a great deal of concert band repertoire in a setting which uses full but minimum instrumentation. This environment will provide for solo experience and develop ensemble skills to a high level
MUSICAL THEATRE
Open to all students regardless of experience. Studied in this course will be a survey of the evolution of music theaterÐ from its beginnings in Greek worship up to the twentieth century. Areas to be covered include vaudeville, burlesque, extravaganza, minstrel show and operetta. The works of Kern, Rodgers, Hart, Lerner, Lowe and Hammerstein will be examined in depth. Activities will include a variety of "hands on" experiences with production and actual performance. Students will have the opportunity to develop both their acting and singing skills. Movies and field trips to community, college, and Broadway shows will be offered on an optional basis.
MUSIC THEORY
This course forms a foundation of knowledge and skill in music that is valuable to the vocalist, instrumentalist orÐ song writer. Students who plan to continue musical studies after high school will find the materials covered both necessary and useful. The grand staff, clefs, tetra chords, key cycle of fifths, intervals, triads, seventh chords, four part harmony, voice leading, diatonic and chromatic harmony, rhythms, orchestration, composition, melody writing, and music calligraphy are included in the course of study
ORCHESTRA
Open to all students who possess performance skills on orchestral instruments. Here, students will discover the fullÐ range of orchestral and chamber music literature from various musical periods. Wind players are selected to rehearse with the strings on the basis of overall balance of instruments and instrumental teacher recommendation.
CONCERT CHORUS
This course is open to all grade 9 12 students interested in singing, whether they have a music backgroundÐ or not. A wide variety of repertoire of choral works in 2, 3, and 4 parts will be studied and performed. Students will learn musicianship, voice development and have the opportunity to perform publicly throughout the school year.
SHOW CHOIR
Open to grade 9-12 students approved by the high school vocal music teacher on a recommendation basis. Students will develop advanced choral techniques and study works from a variety of musical styles and genre. Students will learn musicianship, voice development and have the opportunity to perform publicly throughout the school year.
