UHS Team Competes in Panasonic Creative Design Final Challenge

Union High School Electronics students Mike Castellano, Jon Lambraia and Zack Mauro participated in the Panasonic Creative Design Final Challenge on April 8, 2008, under the direction of their teacher/advisor Mr. Len Gallo.  This engineering/robotics competition was sponsored by Panasonic Corp. and NJIT.  To reach the finals, the team first had to compete in the preliminary challenge in January, in which 80 public and private schools participated. As a result of their efforts, Union High School was 1 of 22 schools to qualify for the final competition.  With each school permitted a maximum of 2 teams, there were 32 teams in the finals.  Having been judged on their oral presentation, written report, engineering logbook, and vehicle performance, the UHS team was ranked 11 out of 32 teams. These pictures show the test platforms at NJPAC where the final competition was held, and the team completing their third and final trial after “rescuing” 2 of 3 Lego People. One team member is already looking forward to next year.  More details can be found at www.panasonic.com/cdc.

Rotary Club Oratorical Contest Winners

The Rotary Club sponsors an oratorical contest for Union High School’s juniors and seniors each year.  Contestants must deliver a 4-5 minute speech on a specific topic.  All prize money is paid to the winners’ schools of choice for higher learning.

The contest this year took place in the UHS Library on Wednesday, April 30th.  The topic was “How Can the Youth of America Shape the Future of this Nation?”  Students needed to include in their speech America’s problems and how young people can impact change, their hopes and fears about America’s future, and what they can do to meet the country’s challenges.
