Rotary Club Awards Students

The Rotary Club sponsors The Marvin Orella Oratorical Contest for Union High School’s juniors and seniors each year. Contestants must deliver a 4-5 minute speech on a specific topic. All prize money is paid to the winners’ schools of choice for higher learning.

The contest this year took place in the UHS Library on Wednesday, May 19th. The topic was “Despite our domestic problems, the United States remains a ‘beacon of hope’ for oppressed people everywhere. Explain why the United States continues to play this role for people throughout the world.” Students needed to address the following issues in their speech: In what way does the United States shine as a “beacon of hope”? What are the strengths of this country? What sets the United States apart politically, economically, and socially from most of the rest of the world?

Students were judged on the content of their speech and their voice, eye contact, and poise.
