"The mission of our Washington School family is to provide every child
with a sound academic foundation, a positive environment and the skills necessary to
continue learning as a lifelong pursuit."
Washington Elementary School prides itself in the knowledge that it provides a sound
academic foundation for students in prekindergarten through fourth grade with additional
focus on programs such as physical education, cultural arts, computer science and world
cultures.
The importance of written language is practiced through an inschool quarterly newspaper
as well as a post office where the children, family and teachers exchange letters. A
banking program and a student run store help to emphasize math and interpersonal skills.
Our third and fourth grade student council practice the democratic process as it governs
these applied academic programs. In addition, the student council conducts many community
minded projects in which the children participate throughout the school year. Besides
this, the students also participate in a conflict resolution program that has peer
mediators helping students to solve problems encountered throughout the day.
Our Parent Teacher Association is well organized and helps to orchestrate thousands of
volunteer hours toward the common vision of academic excellence. Our teachers and support
staff equally shares their energies and work countless hours beyond the normal school day.
Our Student Council is very active and multi-functioning as it seeks to enhance campus
life and deepen everyone's sense of civic responsibility. Our senior citizens and local
residents provide tutorial assistance and classroom support. These collective efforts have
become the hallmark of the Washington School Family.
Upon entering the building, visitors immediately feel a sense of pride and ownership
that is created by those who strive to make it a family atmosphere. They cannot help but
notice the bright and clean interior as well as the positive atmosphere that exists
throughout. This colonial style structure, which now comfortably houses
572 children, was
built in 1931. It is situated on a beautifully landscaped tree-lined five-acre campus. The
structural plan of the building provides for a full gym, a well equipped media and library
center, a separate cafeteria complete with a hot lunch program, a modern computer lab, a
classic auditorium with a seating capacity for over 475 persons, 34 standard sized
classrooms, a nurse's suite, and individual instructional rooms for art, music, speech,
special academic areas, and English as a Second Language instruction. |
